- Description: The best cookbooks for cooking without seed oils: traditional-fat classics, new seed-oil-free titles and the Savor Series, with how we chose them.
- Author: Savannah Ryan
- Tags: Cookbooks, MAHA Recipes

**Quick answer:** For learning to cook with animal fats, start with *The Fat Kitchen* by Andrea Chesman. For the traditional-foods philosophy, *Nourishing Traditions* by Sally Fallon is the long-standing reference. For a book built entirely around avoiding seed oils, *The Seed Oil Free Cookbook* by Leo Watts is the most direct match we found. For world cuisine, see the Savor Series by our own Savannah Ryan.

"Seed oil free" is a new label, so few cookbooks use it on the cover. Many of the best books for this kind of cooking come from the traditional-foods and animal-fat world instead. This list covers both. It's a starting point for building a small shelf, not a ranking.

## How we chose (desk research)

We didn't cook from or test these books for this article. This is desk research: we read each publisher's or retailer's description and checked that the book is currently listed on Amazon. A book made the list if its own description centres on traditional fats such as butter, ghee, tallow, lard or poultry fat, or on avoiding industrial seed oils. We don't quote star ratings, because they change and are easy to misread. Savannah Ryan writes for this site, so her books are in a separate section below, and you can weigh that as you like.

## The best cookbooks for cooking without seed oils

### 1\. The Fat Kitchen by Andrea Chesman

This is the practical one. According to its publisher, *The Fat Kitchen* is a complete guide to rendering and using whole animal fats, including lard, tallow and poultry fat. It explains the qualities and best uses of each fat, how to cure and store them, and includes 100 recipes, from pasta carbonara and pork tamales to roast beef with Yorkshire pudding and jelly doughnuts. If you want to render your own fat, pair it with our [guide to rendering tallow at home](https://thefoodiekitchen.net/how-to-render-tallow/).

### 2\. Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon with Mary G. Enig

*Nourishing Traditions* is the traditional-foods classic, and many people find the seed-oil conversation through it. The publisher describes it as a guide to traditional foods, with topics that include the benefits of traditional fats and oils such as butter and coconut oil, sauces and gravies, preparing grains and legumes, and enzyme-rich condiments and drinks. It's as much a point-of-view book as a recipe book, so read the arguments critically and check health questions with your doctor.

### 3\. The Seed Oil Free Cookbook by Leo Watts

This is the most literal match for the search. Its Amazon description lists 134 recipes in 12 chapters, all free of the eight industrial seed oils and cooked with butter, ghee, extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, beef tallow, lard and duck fat. It also lists oil-substitution charts, a 30-day meal plan with shopping lists, and a dining-out guide by type of restaurant. It covers similar ground to our own [vegetable oil substitute guide](https://thefoodiekitchen.net/vegetable-oil-substitute/) and [restaurant guide](https://thefoodiekitchen.net/how-to-avoid-seed-oils-at-restaurants/).

### 4\. The Modern Pioneer Cookbook by Mary Bryant Shrader

Mary Bryant Shrader runs the Mary's Nest traditional-foods YouTube channel and website. According to her site, the book has over 85 from-scratch recipes, including bone broths, cultured dairy, ferments and sourdough, plus advice on sourcing ingredients and stocking a traditional-foods kitchen. It's published by DK. It's a good fit if you want to cook the whole traditional kitchen, not only swap your frying fat.

### 5\. The MAHA Cookbook by Pete Evans

Skyhorse lists *The MAHA Cookbook* as a 304-page book from its MAHA Books imprint, published November 25, 2025\. The description promises simple whole-food recipes and practical tips for reducing ultra-processed foods. It isn't marketed as a seed-oil-free cookbook, so check each recipe's fat if you're avoiding seed oils strictly. It suits readers who come to this way of eating through the MAHA movement.

### 6\. The Beef Tallow Cookbook by Carson Wyatt

A newer, single-fat book: the Amazon listing gives a publication date of May 4, 2026\. The description covers home rendering by the wet and dry methods, a larger-batch method, and tallow recipes from fried eggs and French fries to pie crust and doughnuts. Because it's new, there's little independent coverage of it yet. Read the sample on Amazon before you buy. ## Background reading on seed oils (not cookbooks)

If you want the argument behind avoiding seed oils, the best-known book is *[Dark Calories: How Vegetable Oils Destroy Our Health and How We Can Get It Back](https://www.amazon.com/dp/0306832399?tag=thefoodieki0f-20)* by Catherine Shanahan, MD. Hachette lists it as a 416-page book from 2024\. Her earlier book, *[Deep Nutrition](https://www.amazon.com/dp/1250113849?tag=thefoodieki0f-20)*, covers traditional diets more broadly. Both take a firm position that not every nutrition researcher shares. For a plainer overview, read our [Seed Oils 101](https://thefoodiekitchen.net/seed-oils-101/) guide.
