- Description: The honest comparison of beef tallow brands available in 2026. Fatworks, Epic, Ancestral Supplements, and more — what makes good tallow, which brands are worth the money, and when to render your own.

Beef tallow quality varies enormously. The colour, smell, and smoke point all differ between a properly rendered grass-fed tallow and a commodity tallow made from mixed feedlot fat. Grass-fed tallow is yellowish from the beta-carotene in the grass diet. Grain-fed tallow is paler and has a blander, less complex fat profile. For everyday MAHA cooking, the difference is noticeable — especially in roasting potatoes, searing steaks, and making smash burgers.

Our #1 Pick — Best Beef Tallow Brand

Fatworks Grass-Fed Beef Tallow 14oz — $16

Fatworks is the best beef tallow brand in the USA. Sourced from grass-fed cattle, rendered in small batches, and packaged in glass (not plastic). The flavour is clean, mild, and neutral — none of the rancid or off smell that characterises lower-quality tallow. Available on Prime, reliably in stock, and the benchmark every other brand is measured against.

## What Makes Good Tallow

Four things: source (grass-fed, pasture-raised is better than grain-fed feedlot), rendering method (slow-rendered at low temperature preserves more nutrients and produces cleaner flavour than high-heat industrial rendering), purity (no additives, no preservatives, no hydrogenation), and packaging (glass jar or food-grade containers — not plastic, which can leach compounds into the fat at temperature).

## The Rankings

Best Overall

Fatworks Grass-Fed Beef Tallow 14oz

The benchmark. Grass-fed, slow-rendered, in glass jars. The yellow colour and clean fatty smell confirm the grass-fed source. Used across every recipe on this site that calls for tallow.

Best Bulk Value

Fatworks Grass-Fed Tallow 42oz

Same Fatworks quality in a larger jar. For households cooking in tallow daily, the 42oz reduces cost per ounce by approximately 35%.

Premium Alternative

Epic Beef Tallow 11oz

Widely available at Whole Foods and Amazon. Slightly pricier than Fatworks per ounce. The roasted garlic and sea salt flavoured versions are popular finishing tallows.

## Rendering Your Own Tallow

For readers near a good butcher: beef suet (the hard fat surrounding the kidneys and loin) rendered at home produces the finest tallow available. Ask your butcher for 2-3kg of suet, chop fine or grind, render in a pot at the lowest possible heat for 3-4 hours until the fat is completely liquid and the remaining connective tissue (cracklings) is golden. Strain through muslin. The result is purer and more flavourful than any commercial tallow. Renders to approximately 60% of its weight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does tallow need to be refrigerated?

No — tallow is shelf-stable at room temperature for 1 year. Refrigerate for longer storage (2+ years). The natural saturated fat profile resists rancidity without refrigeration.

Is tallow the same as suet?

No — suet is the raw hard fat. Tallow is rendered (melted and filtered) suet. You cook with tallow, not suet directly.

Which is better — tallow or lard?

Different fats for different purposes. Tallow has a higher smoke point and beefier flavour — best for searing, roasting, and frying. Lard is slightly more neutral — best for pastry, wok cooking, and recipes where a neutral fat is preferred.
