Golden milk — turmeric milk — has been drunk in India for centuries as a warming, restorative beverage. The key addition from a bioavailability standpoint is the black pepper: piperine in black pepper increases the absorption of curcumin (turmeric's active compound) by approximately 2000%. Ghee provides another fat medium that further enhances absorption, since curcumin is fat-soluble.

The MAHA kitchen version uses ghee rather than coconut oil as the fat addition, producing a richer, more complex flavour that works particularly well with the warm spice profile.

### Ingredients

- 500ml (2 cups) whole milk or full-fat coconut milk
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp ground ginger
- Pinch of freshly cracked black pepper — this is important for absorption
- 1 tbsp ghee
- Honey or maple syrup to taste

### Method

1. Pour the milk into a small saucepan over medium heat. Warm until steaming — do not boil.
2. Whisk in the turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, and black pepper.
3. Add the ghee. Whisk continuously until it melts and the milk is frothy.
4. For maximum froth and emulsification, pour the hot mixture into a blender and blend for 20 seconds.
5. Sweeten with honey or maple syrup to taste.
6. Pour into mugs and drink immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why black pepper?

Piperine in black pepper increases curcumin (turmeric) absorption by up to 2000%. Without it, most of the turmeric passes through unabsorbed.

Is golden milk seed oil free?

Yes. Ghee and whole milk contain no seed oils.

Can I use coconut milk?

Yes — full-fat coconut milk produces a richer, slightly tropical version. Reduce the ghee to ½ tbsp since coconut milk is already high in fat.
