A seed oil free diet removes eight specific industrial cooking oils from everything you eat — canola, soybean, sunflower, safflower, corn, cottonseed, grapeseed, and rice bran — and replaces them with the fats humans used before these oils existed. It is not a calorie-counting protocol, a macronutrient framework, or a branded programme. It is a single decision about which fats go into your food.

The interest in seed oil free eating has grown substantially since 2020, driven partly by the MAHA movement, partly by research on omega-6 linoleic acid accumulation in human body fat, and partly by a growing number of people who report meaningful improvements in energy, digestion, and body composition after removing seed oils. This guide covers what the diet actually involves, how to start, and what the research says.

## What You Remove

The core of a seed oil free diet is the elimination of industrially processed seed oils. These appear in three places: as standalone cooking oils, in processed and packaged foods, and in restaurant cooking.

Remove These

❌ Canola oil

❌ Soybean oil

❌ Sunflower oil

❌ Safflower oil

❌ Corn oil

❌ Cottonseed oil

❌ Grapeseed oil

❌ Rice bran oil

❌ "Vegetable" oil

❌ Margarine

❌ Shortening (Crisco)

❌ Most cooking sprays

Check the ingredient label on everything — oils appear in bread, pasta sauces, salad dressings, crackers, and most restaurant food.

The practical challenge is not cooking at home — that is straightforward. The challenge is packaged and processed food, where seed oils appear even in products marketed as healthy. Granola bars, protein bars, hummus, peanut butter, most supermarket mayonnaise, most salad dressings, and most bread contain at least one seed oil.

## How to Start — Five Steps

1

**Audit your kitchen**

Check every oil, dressing, spread, and sauce. Remove anything with canola, soybean, sunflower, safflower, corn, cottonseed, grapeseed, or rice bran oil in the ingredients.

2

**Buy butter**

Kerrygold unsalted is at most supermarkets. That is enough to start. Every seed oil recipe works with butter.

3

**Cook one meal**

Make something you already cook, using butter instead of canola. Scrambled eggs, a burger, pasta. The food will taste better. That is the point.

4

**Clean up the pantry gradually**

As products run out, replace them with seed oil free versions. Primal Kitchen makes mayo, ketchup, ranch, and BBQ sauce — all clean.

5

**Relax about restaurants**

Home cooking is what matters most. A seed oil free kitchen diet with occasional restaurant meals is far better than the alternative. Get the home right first.

## The Science — What the Research Says

The primary concern with seed oils is their high content of omega-6 linoleic acid, a polyunsaturated fatty acid that is chemically unstable when heated and that accumulates in human body fat over time. A 2015 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition documented that linoleic acid content in American adipose tissue doubled between 1959 and 2008, tracking the rise of seed oil consumption.

The significance of this accumulation is debated at the margins of nutrition science but less so in the ancestral health community. What is not disputed is that the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio in the Western diet has risen from the estimated evolutionary baseline of 4:1 to somewhere between 15:1 and 20:1, and that seed oils are the primary driver of elevated omega-6 intake.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as keto or carnivore?

No. A seed oil free diet has no rules about carbohydrates, protein ratios, or food groups. You can eat bread, rice, fruit, pasta, and all vegetables — the only restriction is on which fats those foods are cooked in or contain.

Is this the same as the MAHA diet?

MAHA (Make America Healthy Again) is a broader movement covering processed food reduction and general ancestral eating. Removing seed oils is the most specific and actionable part of MAHA, and the change most people implement first.

How long before you notice a difference?

Most people report changes in energy and digestion within 2-4 weeks of cooking seed oil free at home. The research on adipose tissue linoleic acid suggests the deeper metabolic changes take considerably longer — the half-life of linoleic acid in body fat is approximately 680 days.

What about eating at restaurants?

Most restaurant cooking uses seed oils. The pragmatic approach: focus on home cooking first, be relaxed about restaurants. A seed oil free home kitchen is the most impactful change most people can make.
