Butter coffee — often called bulletproof coffee, though that is a branded name — is the MAHA morning beverage for a simple reason: it replaces breakfast for those doing time-restricted eating and provides a slow-release fat-fuel source that extends satiety without spiking blood sugar. The fat from grass-fed butter and ghee slows the caffeine absorption from the coffee, producing a gentler, more extended energy curve than black coffee alone.

The blending is not optional. Butter stirred into coffee produces oily, unpleasant coffee. Butter blended for 30 seconds produces a frothy, creamy, emulsified drink that looks and feels like a latte. The difference is complete.

Ingredients

  • 250ml (1 cup) freshly brewed strong black coffee (or 2 shots espresso topped with hot water)
  • 1 tbsp (15g) grass-fed butter (Kerrygold is ideal)
  • 1 tbsp (15g) ghee
  • Optional additions: 1 tsp MCT oil (coconut-derived), pinch of cinnamon, small pinch of sea salt

Method

  1. Brew strong black coffee.
  2. Pour the hot coffee into a blender. Add the butter, ghee, and any optional additions.
  3. Blend on high for 20-30 seconds. The mixture should become frothy and golden — almost like a flat white in appearance.
  4. Pour immediately into a pre-warmed mug.
  5. Drink within 5 minutes — the emulsion separates as it cools.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is butter coffee seed oil free?

Yes. Grass-fed butter and ghee contain no seed oils. Most commercial coffee creamers contain canola or soybean oil.

Will it taste like coffee or like butter?

Neither — properly blended butter coffee tastes rich and creamy, similar to a latte. The butter flavour is background richness, not foreground.

Can I make it in a milk frother?

A milk frother works but produces less complete emulsification than a blender. Use a blender if possible.
